What Should I Bring to a Visa Appointment?

Bring the documents required by your specific embassy, consulate or visa centre. Your passport and application documents come first; travel, accommodation, financial and other supporting evidence depend on the visa.

Quick answer
Bring your passport, appointment or application confirmation where required, and every supporting document listed in your official visa checklist. Depending on the visa, that may include financial evidence, accommodation, travel insurance and a flight reservation.
There is no universal visa appointment checklist
Requirements differ by country, visa category, nationality and application location. Always compare this general list with the instructions issued for your actual appointment.

Essential documents to bring

Passport or travel document
Bring the original passport required for the application and any old passports your checklist specifically requests.
Application confirmation
Bring the visa application confirmation page, barcode or printed form where your visa process requires it.
Appointment confirmation
Bring your appointment letter, confirmation or reference if the visa centre or embassy issued one.
Passport photographs
Bring physical photographs only where required, using the exact size and format specified by the visa authority.

What supporting documents should I bring?

Bring only the supporting evidence required or relevant to your visa application.

Financial evidence
Bank statements, payslips, sponsorship documents or other financial evidence where requested.
Accommodation
Hotel reservations, host details or invitation documents where accommodation evidence is required.
Travel insurance
Bring the policy or certificate where travel medical insurance forms part of the visa requirements.
Travel itinerary
Bring your flight reservation or other itinerary evidence only where the visa checklist asks for it.

You may also need employment letters, business documents, student records, invitation letters, family documents or other evidence depending on the purpose of the visa.

Should I bring my flight reservation?

Yes, if your official checklist asks for one.

For example, current Schengen guidance for applicants in Kenya includes a preliminary ticket booking or travel itinerary and says the flight ticket does not need to be purchased at that stage.

See the official EU Schengen guidance.

If your visa accepts a preliminary reservation, make sure the itinerary shows the correct passenger, route and intended travel dates.

Reservation does not always mean paid ticket
If the checklist accepts a preliminary flight reservation, a genuine provisional itinerary may be appropriate. If it specifically asks for an issued or paid ticket, follow that wording instead.

What about fingerprints and biometrics?

Many visa appointments include biometric collection.

Schengen applicants normally provide fingerprints when submitting the application, subject to exemptions. UK visa application centre appointments can also include fingerprints and a photograph.

Biometrics are usually collected at the appointment—you do not bring fingerprints with you. Bring the identity document and other items your visa centre requires.

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to my visa appointment?

Bring your passport, required application or appointment confirmation and all supporting documents listed in your official visa checklist.

Should I bring bank statements?

Yes if financial evidence is required for your visa. Follow the specified statement period and format.

Should I bring my flight reservation?

Bring it if your checklist asks for a flight reservation, preliminary ticket booking or itinerary. Not every visa requires one.

Do I need printed copies?

That depends on the visa centre. Some processes use uploaded documents while others require originals or photocopies. Follow your appointment instructions rather than assuming digital copies are sufficient.

Should my flight, hotel and insurance dates match?

Where those documents are required, they should describe one coherent trip. Legitimate differences can exist because of overnight flights or multi-city travel.
