Who can apply for an India e-Medical Visa?
The e-Medical Visa is for eligible foreign nationals travelling to India for medical treatment, including treatment under Indian systems of medicine.
Your nationality must be eligible for India's e-Visa system. Check the current country list before applying.
The official application is made through Indian Visa Online.
What documents do I need?
What should the hospital letter say?
The hospital letter is the key medical document.
India's official e-Visa guidance says it should be issued on the Indian hospital's letterhead and include:
- The patient's name.
- The patient's nationality.
- The patient's passport number.
- The proposed or tentative date of admission or treatment.
Do I need a flight ticket and proof of funds?
India's general e-Visa conditions say travelers should have:
- A return ticket or onward journey ticket.
- Sufficient money to spend during the stay in India.
However, the official e-Medical upload list does not currently list a flight ticket or bank statement among the specific documents that must be uploaded with the medical application.
This is different from a regular Medical Visa submitted through an Indian mission. For example, the High Commission in Nairobi requires financial evidence for its regular Medical Visa applications.
For that specific question, read Can I Use a Dummy Flight Ticket for an India Medical Visa?.
Can someone travel with me as a medical attendant?
Yes. India currently allows up to two e-Medical Attendant Visas against one e-Medical Visa patient.
The patient applies for the e-Medical Visa. Eligible accompanying persons apply for the corresponding e-Medical Attendant Visa.
Do African patients need a yellow fever certificate?
This depends on the country you are arriving from.
For travelers arriving from Kenya, India's High Commission in Nairobi currently says a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is mandatory.
The yellow fever vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before travel. The Nairobi mission currently says Oral Polio Vaccine is not required for travelers arriving from Kenya.
Travelers arriving from Somalia currently need both a yellow fever certificate and an Oral Polio Vaccination certificate, with OPV administered at least four weeks before travel.
See the current High Commission of India vaccination requirements.
When should I apply for the e-Medical Visa?
India's current e-Visa instructions say eligible e-Medical applicants can apply:
- At least four days before the intended arrival date.
- Within a 120-day window before the proposed date of travel.
Because you first need the Indian hospital letter, it is sensible to coordinate your proposed treatment date with the hospital before completing the application.
