A dummy ticket does not have one universal validity period. A genuine dummy ticket is normally a provisional flight reservation, and it remains active until the ticketing deadline attached to that booking.
Some reservations may remain active for roughly a day. Others can have shorter or longer deadlines. The airline, fare, route, booking system and how close the flight is to departure can all affect the time limit.
This is why claims such as “every dummy ticket lasts exactly 48 hours” or “all PNRs are valid for 72 hours” should not be treated as universal airline rules.
What does “valid” mean for a dummy ticket?
When travelers ask how long a dummy ticket is “valid,” they can mean several different things.
These are related, but they are not identical.
For example, an itinerary PDF does not suddenly disappear from your email when the PNR expires. You can still possess the document, but the underlying unticketed reservation may no longer be active.
So how long does a dummy flight reservation normally stay active?
There is no single number that applies to every booking.
Travelport's current booking documentation explains that a held booking is confirmed by the airline but has not yet been ticketed. It must be ticketed within the applicable time limit or it expires.
Travelport says this is usually within 24 hours of booking, while also making clear that the actual expiry and payment deadlines are returned as booking-specific conditions.
See Travelport's official Flights Booking Guide.
| Situation | How long? | Important |
|---|---|---|
| Held / provisional reservation | Until the airline or reservation-system ticketing deadline | Often short-lived. The exact deadline varies by airline, fare, route and booking conditions. |
| Common industry example | Often around 24 hours | Travelport says held bookings usually expire within 24 hours if not ticketed, but this is not a universal guarantee. |
| Issued airline ticket | Different concept | Once ticketed, the booking is no longer merely an unticketed hold. Ticket validity and fare rules then apply. |
| Visa processing period | May be much longer than the reservation | A visa can take days or weeks to process even though the provisional reservation expires much earlier. |
| Proof of onward travel near departure | Should still be current when it may be checked | Timing matters more because airline check-in or immigration may need to see the onward journey close to travel. |
Why do dummy tickets expire?
Because a genuine dummy ticket is usually an unticketed reservation.
The reservation can temporarily hold space or record the intended itinerary, but the airline expects ticket issuance before a specified deadline.
If ticketing does not happen by that deadline, the booking can be released or cancelled.
This allows airlines to avoid holding inventory indefinitely for travelers who have not purchased a ticket.
Travelport also documents the distinction between selecting Hold and Ticket: a held booking has no ticket number and must be ticketed by the deadline provided by the airline.
You can read the Travelport booking documentation.
Does the PNR on a dummy ticket expire?
The PNR or booking record is associated with the reservation. If the unticketed air segments reach their deadline and are cancelled, the active flight reservation can cease to exist in the form it had when the itinerary was generated.
What can still be retrieved afterward depends on the booking system, airline and reservation history.
The important distinction is:
This does not make the original reservation “fake.” It means a genuine temporary booking reached the end of its allowed hold period.
For a detailed explanation of the mechanics, read How Dummy Flight Tickets Work.
Does a dummy ticket need to stay valid throughout visa processing?
Visa processing and reservation validity operate on completely different timelines.
A consulate may take days or weeks to decide an application, while an unticketed flight reservation can expire much sooner.
That means it is unrealistic to assume that every temporary flight reservation must remain active throughout the entire visa-processing period.
What matters is that you submit genuine and accurate travel information and follow the visa authority's requirements.
For example, current EU guidance for Schengen applicants in Kenya asks for a preliminary ticket booking or travel itinerary and specifically says that buying the flight ticket is not necessary at that stage.
See the official EU Schengen guidance.
Should my dummy ticket still be valid on the day of my visa appointment?
If the flight reservation will be submitted at the visa appointment, it is generally more practical to arrange the reservation close enough to the appointment that it is still current when you submit it.
For example, obtaining a short-lived reservation several weeks before the appointment may not make sense.
But do not blindly use a fixed rule such as:
- “Always buy it exactly 24 hours before biometrics.”
- “Always buy it exactly three days before the appointment.”
- “A visa reservation must remain valid for seven days.”
The correct timing depends on when your documents are actually submitted and the validity of the particular reservation.
We cover this separately in When Should I Buy a Dummy Ticket?.
What if my dummy ticket expires after I submit my visa application?
Do not panic simply because a genuine temporary reservation later reaches its ticketing deadline.
If the visa authority does not ask for anything further, there may be nothing for you to update.
If the embassy or consulate later asks for a current or updated itinerary, obtain a fresh genuine reservation reflecting the travel plan you intend to use.
For more on what visa officials may review, see What Do Visa Officers Check on a Dummy Ticket?.
Is dummy ticket validity different for proof of onward travel?
The underlying reservation mechanics are the same, but the timing requirement can be very different.
For a visa application, the reservation may be submitted days or weeks before the decision.
For proof of onward travel, an airline may ask to see the onward journey at check-in immediately before you fly. An immigration officer may also ask after you land.
That means a temporary onward reservation should be timed so that it is expected to remain current when it may actually be checked.

Can a dummy ticket still be verified after it expires?
You should distinguish between verifying that a booking is currently active and establishing that a reservation existed previously.
Once an unticketed booking expires, its live air segments may no longer be available through the same customer-facing retrieval method.
Reservation history may still exist within airline, travel-agency or reservation-system records, but what remains accessible—and to whom—varies.
This is another reason not to make promises such as:
Can I get another dummy ticket if the first one expires?
Yes. If you still need a current provisional itinerary, you can obtain a new reservation based on your current intended travel plan.
This may be appropriate when:
- Your visa authority requests updated flight details.
- Your appointment was postponed.
- Your intended travel dates have changed.
- Your original flight is no longer available.
- You need current proof of onward travel.
Generate a new reservation rather than modifying an expired document yourself.
How does dummy ticket validity work with Flightika?
Flightika provides genuine provisional flight reservations rather than airline-looking documents generated from invented information.
You can:
This gives you an affordable way to obtain a genuine flight itinerary when a provisional reservation is appropriate, without pretending that an unticketed booking will remain active forever.

Dummy ticket validity checklist
- Do not assume every reservation lasts 24, 48 or 72 hours.
- Remember that validity comes from the underlying booking, not the PDF.
- Time visa reservations around when the document will actually be submitted.
- Time onward-travel reservations around when airlines or immigration may check them.
- Check that your travel dates are still current.
- Do not represent an expired booking as active.
- Do not edit an old PNR or change dates manually.
- Obtain a fresh genuine reservation if updated evidence is required.
- Never confuse a provisional reservation with a fully issued airline ticket.
- Follow any specific validity requirement issued by the embassy, airline or immigration authority.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a dummy ticket stay valid?
There is no universal validity period. A genuine provisional reservation remains active until its ticketing deadline. Travelport says held bookings commonly expire within about 24 hours if they are not ticketed, but the actual deadline can vary.
Is every dummy ticket valid for 48 hours?
No. A 48-hour period can apply to a particular reservation, but there is no universal airline rule making every dummy ticket valid for exactly 48 hours.
Is every dummy ticket valid for 72 hours?
No. The same applies to 72 hours. Reservation duration depends on the airline, fare, route and booking conditions.
Why does my PNR expire?
An unticketed reservation has a deadline by which the ticket must be issued. If ticketing does not occur, the airline can release the held booking.
What if the dummy ticket expires after my visa appointment?
A genuine temporary booking can naturally expire during visa processing. If the consulate later requests an updated itinerary, obtain a fresh genuine reservation rather than editing the expired document.
Does it have to remain valid until my visa is approved?
Not necessarily. Visa processing can take much longer than a provisional reservation remains active. Follow any specific requirement issued by the visa authority.
Should my onward ticket still be active when I fly?
If an airline or immigration authority may rely on the reservation as proof of onward travel, the reservation should be current when that check occurs.
Can I renew an expired dummy ticket?
If you need current travel evidence, obtain a fresh genuine reservation matching your current itinerary. Do not manually alter the old reservation to make it appear active.
